Mixer Truck Operator

POSITION SUMMARY

The Mixer Truck Operator reports directly to the Area Manager and is responsible for the safe, proper, and professional handling and operation of a ready-mix concrete truck in urban, residential, and rural environments and in both on and off-road situations to deliver ready-concrete products from batch plants to constructions sites.

AVAILABILITY

The Mixer Truck Operator is expected to work Monday through Friday and Saturdays as required.  A standard workday is 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Saturday work is scheduled as needed.  On rare occasions, Sunday and holiday work may be required.  The Mixer Truck Operator must be flexible to adjusting daily start and/or finishing times to meet the needs of our customers.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

The Mixer Truck Operator is expected to perform all essential responsibilities and duties in a manner which maintains a safe and healthful working environment for him/herself as well as those he/she will work around on a daily basis in accordance with all company policies and procedures, including those outlined in the company Safety & Health Manual and the Progressive Discipline & Counseling policy as well as all Local, State, and Federal guidelines.

The Mixer Truck Operator is expected to be familiar with and perform the job duties below and as described in the Standard Operating Procedures for Mixer Truck Operators.

 Operation and Maintenance of Equipment

    1. Safely and efficiently drive and operate a ready-mix concrete truck to and from various jobsites to deliver ready mix concrete.
    2. Perform and document daily vehicle inspections of the ready-mix concrete truck.
    3. Follow order and delivery instructions received from dispatchers regarding concrete mix, delivery address and instructions, and other conditions as well as instructions for disposing or placing returned concrete.
    4. Must be able to visually inspect a load of concrete to verify the mix and the slump with the information on the load delivery ticket.
    5. Perform regular preventative maintenance of the ready-mix concrete truck including but not limited to:
      1. Check and maintain all fluid levels as described by the equipment manufacturer including water, oil, transmission, and hydraulic fluids.
      2. Check and maintain tire pressure as described by the equipment manufacturer.
      3. Grease all hubs and other components as described by the equipment manufacturer.
    6. Keep the ready-mix concrete truck clean both inside and outside in accordance with company policy including but not limited to daily washout and clean-up, pre-trip washdown, and post-delivery rinse off.
    7. Follow customer instructions and signals for unloading ready-mix concrete, using common sense and good judgement to protect him/herself, company equipment, and customer property.
    8. Accurately fill in and complete required information on a delivery ticket.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES

    1. Participate in, and at times, lead weekly safety talks.
    2. Complete required annual safety training.
    3. Safely and proficiently operate a rubber tire front-end loader as requested in accordance with company policy.
    4. Assist with concrete block molds in accordance with company policy.
    5. Maintain a clean ready room, break room, and lavatory facility.
    6. Assist with and perform other reasonable tasks around the general plant and yard facilities as requested by a Plant Manager.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands of the Mixer Truck Operator position are essential to the performance of this job.  Any change in these demands would fundamentally change the job.  The physical demands require that the Mixer Truck Operator be able to do the following:

    1. Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time often on wet, slick, and/or uneven terrain or surfaces.
    2. Must be capable of lifting, carrying, and/or toting up to 50 Lbs.
    3. Must be able to bend/stoop, squat/crouch, push/pull, climb, kneel, and twist.
    4. Must be able work both inside and outside, in the heat and cold, and around moving equipment.
    5. Must be able to climb into and out of the ready-mix concrete truck and other equipment several times a day.
    6. Must be able to manipulate controls safely and accurately by pushing, pulling, squeezing, and turning levers, knobs, buttons, and wheels.

RESTRICTIONS

The following restrictions apply to the Mixer Truck Operator position:

    1. Must be able to perform multiple tasks of sustained viewing activity at the rear of the ready-mix concrete truck utilizing side mirrors while simultaneously driving and manipulating mixer drum controls.
    2. Must be able to use various tools and equipment in a safe manner to perform job functions.  These include but are not limited to broom, mop, pick, shovel, garden hoe, sledgehammer, rubber hammer, electric chipping hammer, air hammer, and other various hand and power tools as needed.
    3. Must possess and maintain a valid Class B (or higher) commercial driver license.
    4. Must maintain a suitable driving record with the Department of Transportation.
    5. Must maintain a valid Department of Transportation physical examination certificate.
    6. Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
    7. Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical exam.
    8. Must be able to read, write, and understand English.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  1. Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent.

Skills

    1. The Mixer Truck Operator should be dependable and act in a professional manner with customers and fellow employees.
    2. The Mixer Truck Operator should possess a positive attitude and a level of determination to successfully complete deliveries and other tasks and assignments.
    3. The Mixer Truck Operator should be a self-starter and motivated to learn.

Experience 

Previous experience with a ready-mix concrete truck is preferred, but not required.
